WHERE STRATEGY MEETS SOUL
BUSINESS FOR THE ONES WHO BREAK THE RULES

How My Childhood Obsession With Teeth Taught Me the Best Lesson About Business

Jun 20, 2025

Most kids wanted to be cowboys, ballerinas, or the President.
Me? I wanted to be a dentist.

Not because I loved pearly whites or wanted to hand out floss.
No—I was obsessed with the weirdness of teeth.
These tiny bones that grow out of your face, fall out, and come back in?
We’re born with an empty mouth hole and just... grow a backup set? That’s wild.

While other kids were watching cartoons, I was grilling my dentist mid-cleaning:
“What tooth are you working on?”
“What compound is that filling made from?”
“What’s in the happy gas?”
“What does this tool do? What’s it made of?”

And I didn’t stop there. I asked my grandparents about cattle teeth.
Studied molars in the encyclopedia.
Drew so many pictures of teeth my art teacher probably flagged me.

My dentist’s office even kept a little white lab coat on hand for me.
I was the tiny dentist—talking my way into exam rooms, even during my mom’s oral surgery.
Full uniform. Full interrogation mode.
Looking back, wildly inappropriate—but also? Iconic.

Eventually, that dream died (I bit my dentist. Long story.)
But what sticks with me now isn’t the career I didn’t have.
It’s the confidence. The obsession. The absolute refusal to shut up about something I loved.

As an adult, I realized I’d lost her—
That little firecracker who would’ve gladly performed a root canal if handed the drill.
That girl didn’t question if she was qualified.
She asked. She showed up. She took space.

And somewhere between being that girl and becoming a business owner, I dimmed her down.

Because entrepreneurship? It messes with your visibility.
You start worrying what people think.
You hesitate to post.
You over-edit your brilliance until it’s beige again.

But when I realized I still feel that exact passion for business—
For coaching, for strategy, for design, for helping people build brands that actually work
I knew what I had to do!
I had to bring her back.
That weird little dentist-loving, question-asking, lab coat-wearing version of me.

Because when I show up like her, I’m unstoppable.
And when you do the same—when you stop quieting your own brilliance—you’ll feel it too.

So here’s your Slight Look truth

You don’t need to be more polished. You need to be more you.
You don’t need to wait until you feel “ready.” You already are.
The boldest version of you? She’s not gone. She’s just waiting for permission.
